Fortunately for us our packing has been uneventful, its gone very much as we expected it to. Thursday Brian got a call from the packers wondering if they could just wait and come on Monday instead of splitting us over the weekend. He of course said yes, especially because in no way shape or form were we ready for them to come on Friday. It worked out quite well because we didn't have to deal with boxes all weekend and actually had some fun.
Monday the packers arrived at 9:00am, worked till noon, took an hour for lunch (they are required), and were done for the day by just after 3:00pm.
Brian and I got stuff gathered up and emptied the fridge to check into the TLF (Temporary Lodging Facility - its like a mini-apartment) and got everyone loaded in the car. I think by this point my Mom was just a tad bit overwhelmed. Brian got us checked in and we headed to our room, once again it was a bit of a zoo getting everyone into the the room and settled down (Gus has never stayed anywhere other than our house since we've had him so he was kept looking at us like: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE?!?!" Everyone settled in nicely and Brian and I headed back to the house to do some cleaning.
As we were leaving the house and headed back to lodging, we could see a pretty serious storm headed towards base. We don't always worry about storms because 90% of the time they just blow right around us. Once back in the TLF the wind picked up and the storm blew in.
Well - now we get to the title... Brian and I are headed out this morning to go over to the house to meet the packers for day two of packing to find some pretty serious scratches on the front fender of the truck. Brian looks at the truck and looks at me and was serious confused as to how the scratches got on the truck. I had see an asphalt roof shingle laying near the car and picked it up and sure enough that's what had hit the truck. We decided we needed to go have a discussion with the lodging people before we headed to the house. When we told the lady what had happened she was like "Well that's not good, let me call my supervisor and I'll find out what we need to do to take care of this situation." It turns out the only thing we could do was to call security forces and report the incident.
Side Story: back when I was about 9 months pregnant we were backed into in the BX parking lot, it was a 90+ degree day and it took Security Forces over 45 minutes to show up to the scene, and then when they showed up they were completely biased to the party at fault (she backed into us and Brian had time to honk the horn and she still didn't stop - in fact she told us in the future we need to honk louder.) They they printed in the paper and the memo handed to all the commanders that it was Brian's fault. We got it rectified but in the process decided we have absolutely no use what-so-ever for Security Forces here at Holloman AFB.
Back to the story: As she tells Brian and I that we need to call Security Forces, we both look at one another and rolls our eyes, and say "Well we don't have that sort of time". After checking to make sure the car didn't get hit too we've decided we'll just deal as most of it is plastic damage.
Why, why, why?!?! Our beautiful BRIGHT red car is covered in dents from people opening doors into it, banging luggage into it, backing into it (there may be two little tiny spots where someone who shall remain nameless- but it wasn't Brian- backed into a pylon, but compared to the rest the damage to our vehicles is not the fault of either one of us.
So in the future if you're ever staying in the Pet Friendly part of the Holloman TLF don't park your car in front of the building, we'd suggest the side parking off the end of the building, so in the event of a terrible wind storm your car/truck is not attacked by flying roof shingles.
Lets just hope this is the biggest thing that happens between now and when we arrive in Ohio!
They pack the truck tomorrow, we final out of our house on Thursday, and we drive away on Friday!!
